Appropriations

Who Are You? You Want How Much?

FY23

Secured state grant of

$183,000

an increase of over 30% to their
existing line-item

A 50-year old, Chicago-based organization with a statewide presence and a national footprint needed money. Their mission depended on an infusion of cash – $183,000 – from the State of Illinois.

The communities served and benefited by the group’s work knew their story. But lawmakers didn’t.

The organization hired Sanborn Williams.

Sanborn Williams sampled 25 diverse lawmakers about the organization’s work. Of the 25 legislators queried, only one had any familiarity with the organization. Just one. Nevermind their admirable mission, it was clear that a $183,000 ask to extend the group’s services was going to be a heavy lift.

FY24 UPDATE:  Sanborn Williams worked to identify an opportunity that would expand the organization’s appropriations through a strategy that educated lawmakers on some of the more emotional work of the organization. Sanborn Williams had an inside track on the budget draft, hearing about the what amount the organization would receive prior to the draft amendment being put before the public eye. The plan worked and Sanborn Williams ended up obtaining $60,000 over the amount the organization needed. Coming in above asking price is always a plus…

The organization’s goal, when first soliciting the services of Sanborn Williams, was to return their state budget line-item to what it has been in the early 2000’s – $1 million. They currently sit just $50,000 short.

Another victory.

Fiscal Year 2024

Added A Record Increase Of

$345,000

more than doubling the organization’s line item since they engaged Sanborn Williams
